Independents' Day?

On a visit to Gifts & Decorative Accessories' website today, I came across a release on the launch of a community website for supporters of independent retail businesses called IndieBound.org. Intrigued, I immediately clicked on to the site.

IndieBound.org has several great features: visitors are invited to share their favorite stories about shopping at independent retailers; there's news about independent retailers; and users are invited to join the community on Twitter and Facebook. The site also makes the case for shopping at independents. Here are a few of the facts listed:

* The Economy: Spend $100 at a local store and $68 of that stays in the community. Only $43 of every $100 spent at a national chain stays in the community.
* The Environment: Buying local means less packaging, less transportation, and a smaller carbon footprint. Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money to beautify your community.
The Community: Local businesses donate to charities at more than twice the rate of national chains. More independents means more choice, more diversity, and a truly unique community.

Today, I also posted a release on www.gifts-and-tablewares.com detailing a two-day program for independent retailers being held at the Pacific Market Center in Seattle. In addition, in June Retail Council of Canada and Scotiabank launched Independent Retail: A Changing Landscape, a year-long initiative mandated to discover and recommend solutions for the challenges affecting Canada's independent retailers in urban and rural communities.

Could it be that independents are finally having their day?
